My name is Caeda Billows and this is my blog for a course called Sustainable Solutions. In this course we are each addressing an environmental concern and what can be done to solve it. In my research I will attempt to find solutions to the negative impacts that food production has on the ocean and marine life. These solutions will be viable if in accordance with our definition of sustainability which is as follows;
Something is sustainable if it contributes to each of the following objectives over the long-term:
Protection of natural systems and biodiversity through the use of resources in a way that maximizes renewal, encourages re-use, and minimizes waste; through the reduction of pollution and the mitigation of global climate change; and preservation;
Provision of equitable economic development and opportunity without undermining people’s capacity to meet their own needs in the present and future; and
Elevation of human well-being standards which include: improved health and nutrition; access to clean air and water; and education, the empowerment of women and gender equity, and promotion of human rights.
Best practice for meeting these objectives include using a participatory, inclusive process with transparent governance based on scientific principles; and assessment through the development of measurable indicators that show improvement in each of the above criteria.
